Fits & Faints

Most episodes in childhood and adolescence of collapse or loss of consciousness are simple faints (vasovagal syncope).

These are usually brief and simple lifestyle interventions such as increasing dietary fluid & salt intake along with exercise is all that's needed.

At times, the diagnosis may not be as clear on history itself and other possibilities such as absences "petit mal epilepsy" OR heart rhythm disturbaces "arrhythmia" may need exclusion.

Investigations such as an EEG (monitoring electrical activity of the brain) OR ECG may be necessary.

There are numerous medications that can be tried if episodes are particularly frequent or disabling.

Counselling patients often forms a key principle of therapy and I use techniques based on CBT "cognitive behavioural Therapy."
